Elements and Modalities

The Elements:

As a very general rule, Signs falling within each of the elements will share certain characteristics. Please be careful not to put too much emphasis on elemental qualities, however, as they are only one of a number of influences within the natal chart.

Fire Signs (Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius) may tend to show the qualities of enthusiasm, energy, and optimism -- the GO-GETTERS of the Zodiac.

Earth Signs (Capricorn, Taurus, and Virgo) may tend toward practicality, realism, prudence -- a "down-to-earth" attitude. They are the GROUNDING ENERGY of the Zodiac.

Air Signs (Libra, Aquarius, and Gemini) may seem a bit aloof or detached, tending toward intellect and mentality. They are the THINKERS of the Zodiac.

Water Signs (Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces) may tend toward emotion, sensitivity, feeling -- intuition is frequently stronger than logic with the Water Signs. Moody and fruitful, Water Signs are the INTUITORS of the Zodiac.

The Modalities:

Each of the Signs of the Zodiac are divided into Modalities (sometimes referred to as "Qualities"): Cardinal, Fixed, or Mutable. Generally, the Cardinal Signs will share certain common traits, as will the Fixed and Mutable Signs. Again, please be cautious about assigning too much importance to Mode -- it, too, is one small part of the natal chart.

Generally, the Cardinal signs represent commencement and activity. People with a strong Cardinal influence tend to be the movers and shakers of the Zodiac, active people, initiators. They are most comfortable with stirring the pot and getting things going, and are not content with the status quo.

The Fixed Signs represent stability. People with a strong Fixed influence tend to be the ones who get things done, who finish what they or others start. They're less comfortable with change and more content with the status quo. They tend to be practical and efficient.

The Mutable Signs represent versatility. People with a strong Mutable influence tend to be social and quick to adapt. They are most comfortable with change, and least content with the status quo. They may tend to "sway with the wind" more than Cardinal Signs, but they'll be the last to cave in when unexpected changes come calling!
